Importance of House Orientation

There is often a tendency to underestimate the importance of house orientation. However, studies show that it can have a considerable impact on comfort and heating costs. Thus, optimal orientation can result in heating savings of 10 to 30% for an ordinary dwelling house. This does not require any additional investment, but a little reflection with your coastal house plans before starting work.

Your plot of land to build a house that is open to the south means that sunlight cannot be blocked in winter by a building, a hill or other obstacles such as conifers. You have every interest to enjoy this winter sun to heat your home. It is therefore important to think with your coastal house plans according to your land – the right habitation is the one that is adapted to the terrain on which it is located.

The spaces near the coastline are characterized by their permanent and particularly rapid mobility on the geological time scale as well as on the human scale. On this dynamic environment, societies occupying a narrow and moving space were progressively installed. Today, heavily invested, the coastal fringe has become a territory at risk. The vagaries linked to its intrinsic mobility and the stakes that are concentrated give it a great vulnerability, characteristic of many urbanized coastlines.
