Advantages & Disadvantages of a Colonial Style Home

The colonial house plans came to North America in the 1700s. The different types of colonies styles include Cape Cod, Saltbox and the Dutch colonial. While the exterior style of the centuries-old design has not changed much, the interiors express modern advances in architectural possibilities. However, colonial houses are not for everyone. You must consider several factors to determine your functional and aesthetic needs.

Most Americans are at least vaguely familiar with the exterior elements of the colonial house. The most notable are the outer columns placed symmetrically. Colonial houses usually have a central main door. The surroundings on both sides of the door are symmetrical on both sides. These houses have clean lines that give them a neat and conservative appearance. With the many variations in the sizes of colonial houses and the materials used in the construction, the houses are elegantly simple rather than eccentric.

Most colonial house plans consist of two-storey. A two-storey house is not ideal for people with mobility problems or for people with young families. Elderly people who experience climbing difficulties will find stairs to be a disadvantage. Families with small children are overwhelmed by the installation of safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to prevent falling injuries.
